The Police Legal Advisor is an indispensable member of the Chief's Office staff. The current Police Legal Advisor is Catherine Clifton. She is responsible for counseling the Chief regarding criminal and civil law matters that affect the Department.

The legal advisor often issues legal bulletins to Department officers that feature new laws and court decisions that concern their duties.  She also represents the Department‘s interests in civil litigation.  It is essential that the Department has a representative to work closely with outside law firms in these matters.  The legal advisor also supervises the staff of attorneys in the Municipal Court Prosecutor's Office and serves as a liaison between the Municipal Court and the Police Department.
