1. What crimes are covered?

Crimes Covered by the Crime Victims Compensation Program

Crimes covered by Crime Victims Compensation are those in which the victim suffers substantial threat of physical or emotional harm or death. These may include:

• Assault
• Homicide
• Kidnapping
• Robbery
• Sexual assault
• Other violent crimes

Covered Vehicular Crimes

Vehicular crimes that are covered include:

• Failure to stop and render aid
• Driving While Intoxicated (DWI)
• Manslaughter
• Criminally negligent homicide
• Aggravated assault
• Intoxication manslaughter
• Intoxication assault

2. Who is eligible?

In order to qualify for Crime Victims Compensation the following items must occur:

1. Report the crime to a law enforcement agency within a reasonable period of time, but not so late as to interfere with or hamper the investigation and prosecution of the crime
2. File the application within 3 years of the date of the crime
3. The victim must cooperate with law enforcement and prosecution efforts
4. The victim must be an innocent victim of crime who suffers substantial threat of physical and or emotional harm

3. What sort of expenses might be covered by Crime Victims Compensation funding?

Crime Victims Compensation may be available to pay the amount of expenses reasonably and necessarily incurred for:

1. Medical, counseling, prescription and rehabilitative services
2. Partial loss of earnings due to disability resulting from personal injury, participation in the criminal justice process, or seeking medical treatment
3. Child care for minor children to enable a victim or spouse of a deceased victim to continue employment
4. Certain funeral and burial expenses
5. Reasonable costs associated with crime scene cleanup
6. Reasonable replacement costs for clothing or bedding taken as evidence or made unusable as a result of the criminal investigation of a sexual assault
7. Travel expenses necessary to participate in the criminal justice process and/or seek medical treatment
8. One-time payment of certain relocation expenses in domestic violence and sexual assault; this does not include reimbursement for property damage or loss
