Arrest made in 1994 Cold Case Murder
Denise Christie Brothers, DOB 1/19/56, was reported missing on January 1, 1994, and her body was discovered on February 2, 1994. Her death was ruled a homicide. This case presented several leads, but remained unsolved for over 24 years. Recently, new information arose that lead to a charge.
On May 17, 2018, Company “B” UCIT Texas Ranger J. Holland conducted several interviews with convicted murderer Samuel McDowell AKA Samuel Little, DOB 06/07/1940. McDowell provided a timeline putting him in Odessa during the time the crime was committed. He had intimate knowledge of the crime and about the victim that was never released to the public. On September 24, 2018, Ranger Holland and Odessa Police Department Detective J R Caid brought Little to Odessa where he was magistrated and subsequently taken to Decatur, TX.
The Odessa Police Department continuously re-evaluates each cold case murder to ensure everything possible is being done to solve them. The Department cannot adequately express our gratitude to the Texas Rangers for the great deal of time and effort that they dedicated to bringing charges in this case. We would also like to thank Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis and his Office and Ector County District Attorney Bobby Bland and his Office for the great deal of work and coordination that was involved in getting to this point in this investigation.
The Odessa Police Department sincerely hopes that this arrest will help bring closure to the family of the victim. We also hope that this will serve as encouragement to the families of the victims in other cases that are unsolved that law enforcement will never stop searching for the perpetrators of these crimes.
