Odessa Police Charge Man with Intoxication Assault

Odessa Police have made an arrest in connection to a major crash that occurred last weekend in South Odessa. Guadalupe Hinojos Marquez, date of birth 12/12/1977, has been charged with Intoxication Assault “3rd Degree Felony”. Marquez was placed into custody today at approximately 1308 hours and was transported to the ECLEC.
On December 29, 2018 at approximately 0228 hours, Odessa Police and Odessa Fire Rescue responded to IH-20 and Grandview in reference to a major crash. Investigation revealed that a 2004 GMC pickup, being operated by Steven Craig Marshall, 58 years of age, of Tucson, Arizona, was traveling westbound on IH-20. A 2017 Jeep, being operated by Guadalupe Hinojos Marquez, 41 years of age, of Odessa, was traveling southbound on Meadow. The front passenger of the Jeep was identified as Sandra Vanessa Benavidez, 35 years of age, of Odessa.
Investigation revealed that Marquez failed to stop at the stop sign at the north service road and continued southbound through the median before being struck by the GMC pickup. The impact caused the Jeep to roll on its side and Benavidez was ejected. Benavides was transported to Medical Center Hospital with life-threatening injuries and is currently listed as being in critical condition. Marshall was also transported to Medical Center Hospital with serious bodily injury.
Further investigation revealed that Marquez was intoxicated during the time of the crash. Based on the facts and circumstances presented during the investigation, the OPD Traffic Unit obtained a warrant for Marquez, who was charged and arrested accordingly.
More charges are anticipated and the investigation continues.
