The Odessa Police Department Traffic Division is a specially-skilled unit whose primary function is traffic enforcement and the investigation of fatal or potentially fatal traffic collisions and hit and run accident investigations. All of the traffic officers receive training in collision investigation and specialized advanced training in collision reconstruction.
The Traffic Division is a pro-active unit in traffic enforcement and has the additional responsibility for coordinating special events such as parades, fun runs, festivals, large sporting events and civic celebrations. The Traffic Division reviews all special events permit requests that require street closure and other local government notifications.
The Traffic Division also oversees the Parking Control Enforcement personnel who are responsible for the parking enforcement in the downtown area of the City of Odessa; conduct, organize, and collect the fees associated with the publicly held auctions for abandoned vehicles. Their duties also include assisting other City Divisions in the enforcement of violations of the City Code involving abandoned vehicles. The Traffic Division, in coordination with the Ector County Independent School District (E.C.I.S.D), is also responsible for the schools' crossing guards.
